Mt. San Antonio College

At Mt. San Antonio College, I run a design studio that functions as a training ground for students. I teach  students on the best approaches for completing real-world projects and provide training. I was approached by the marketing department on campus to help with the development of a new landing page. My objective was to design a concept along side my students while I used this as an opportunity to introduce them to Figma.
The original homepage was designed in 2016, so it grew stagnant without any major revisions over the years. Our goals were to integrate video content, create a much more visual and user friendly experience, and to tell the story of Mt. SAC and what it's about. We went from a fixed width design to full width designs that were much more immersive.
I produced the concept that will be going live. The two students that participated on this project produced the two other concepts under my instruction. The students are community college students that had little to no experience in web and UI/UX design prior to working on this project.

Improved Navigation

In order to improve navigation, blocks were added to help users either navigate to information on the field of study or types of academic programs they were interested in.
A critical issue with the previous design was the lack of discovery methods available to users to help them learn about different programs. There was no clear method of searching for academic programs previously and students either had to search through the catalog and executing a search or read through a directory in hopes of finding the information they were looking for.

A Much More Visual Experience

The balance between imagery and color was used to create effective points of emphasis. Each section was carefully designed to highlight important information, while providing the user with greater visual detail to support the content.
This redesign brings a new visually appealing news room as well as an effective way to communicate the scale of its academic offerings through imagery. The increased use of imagery offers a much better opportunity for them to tell the story about their student experiences.
